The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has said that all international shipments from Nigeria to the United States will now attract a compulsory prepaid customs duty of $80 (about ₦122,400).
In a statement issued Friday in Abuja, NIPOST’s Director of Corporate Communications, Ibrahim Musa, explained that the measure follows a US Executive Order suspending duty-free exemptions on global postal items.
The charge applies to all non-document shipments, including parcels and packages. Musa said the duty, though imposed by US authorities, will be collected by NIPOST at the point of acceptance in Nigeria before dispatch.
“This is not unique to Nigeria. Postal operators worldwide have been directed to comply with the new US policy,” he said.
He also cautioned that senders should expect longer delivery times as international carriers adjust to the changes. Musa noted that the policy will particularly affect Nigerians who frequently send goods, gifts, or business packages to the US.
