Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called for support for African Union–endorsed candidates, particularly Nigeria’s bid for re-election into Part 2 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council.

Keyamo made the appeal while presenting Nigeria’s statement at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ICAO’s principles, highlighting ongoing investments in infrastructure modernisation, regulatory reforms, and capacity building to align the country’s aviation sector with global standards.

The minister noted that Nigeria hosts the Regional Safety Oversight Organisation—Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO)—and remains its biggest contributor. He also underscored Nigeria’s support for the Regional Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA).

On environmental commitments, Keyamo said Nigeria has consistently submitted its state action plan on carbon emissions and participates voluntarily in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

He congratulated ICAO President Salvatore Sciacchiatano, Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, the ICAO Secretariat, and the Canadian government for successfully hosting the Assembly. He further urged delegates to work together in achieving ICAO’s goals despite geographic differences.

Keyamo also invited participants to the Nigerian International Airshow, scheduled to take place in Abuja from December 2 to 4, 2025, adding, “The skies may divide our geographies, but through ICAO, they unite our goals and aspirations.”
