Nigeria has initiated efforts to ease growing tensions with Ghana following recent agitations by some Ghanaians calling for Nigerians to leave the country. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ghana during her official visit to the West African nation.
Speaking on Wednesday as part of her ongoing two-day mission, Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasised that Nigeria’s relationship with Ghana would go beyond government-to-government engagement and extend to fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
According to a statement issued by her spokesperson, Dr. Magnus Eze, the minister’s visit is aimed at addressing the state of Nigeria-Ghana relations and engaging key stakeholders to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Nigerians living in Ghana. Her itinerary includes meetings with Ghana’s President, the Foreign Minister, traditional rulers, and members of the Nigerian community.
Shortly after arriving at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Tuesday evening, the minister had a brief interaction with Ghana’s Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who was en route to the United Kingdom.
On Wednesday, Odumegwu-Ojukwu continued her consultations with Ghanaian officials and leaders of the Nigerian diaspora. She is expected to return to Abuja on Thursday.
