The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed off Ibiza Nite Club, De Hive Night Club, and 12 other facilities in Abuja for various breaches of environmental laws.
Announcing the clampdown on Wednesday, the Director General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, warned that the agency would not tolerate violations of environmental standards, stressing its firm commitment to protecting public health and the environment.
Barikor said the closures followed public complaints and subsequent inspections by NESREA, which revealed that Ibiza Nite Club and De Hive Night Club had exceeded the permissible noise levels in violation of the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations 2009.
According to him, the agency had issued three notices to the clubs, highlighting their infractions and demanding immediate corrective action. However, the operators failed to comply, prompting NESREA to shut them down to safeguard residents’ well-being.
In a related development, the agency also sealed Dai Jin Jia Investment Limited after investigations confirmed multiple violations including ground vibration, flying rocks, and air and noise pollution—contrary to the National Environmental (Quarrying and Blasting Operations) Regulations 2013.
Barikor explained that the company used 4,000kg of explosives per blast, exceeding the 3,000kg limit set by law. The 14-metre blasting hole depth and 17-metre quarrying pit also surpassed the regulatory limits of 8–10 metres and 3 metres respectively.
Additionally, eleven other construction and estate development companies were sanctioned for operating without essential environmental documentation such as Environmental Impact Statements and Environmental Audit Reports. The affected facilities include:
- Shaanxi Construction, Airport Road
- Bromley Home, Katampe
- Clover Court, Mabushi
- Skyscape Real Estate Limited, Sabon Lugbe
- Richardo Estate, Wuye
- H Medix Building, Wuye
- Stepcho Nigeria Limited, Wuye
- Bima Shelter, Asokoro
- Bilami Nig. Enterprise, Kado
- Ifedi Homes Estate, Kukwaba District
- Java Design Concept Nigeria, Wuse II
Prof. Barikor assured that NESREA will continue to monitor facilities across the country and take decisive action against those flouting environmental regulations.
