The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all custodial centres across the country as “red zones” ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.
The Service’s spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, announced the directive in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, warning members of the public to stay away from all correctional facilities during the demonstrations.
According to Umar, the move is a precautionary measure to prevent unauthorized access and ensure security at correctional centres nationwide.
“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as red zones,” the statement read. “Correctional facilities are restricted areas, and anyone without official business should stay off to avoid security breaches or unfortunate incidents.”
He urged Nigerians to cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and order throughout the protest period.
The protest, organized by activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore, is scheduled to take place on October 20 around Eagle Square and the Central Business District in Abuja. It seeks the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.
Police authorities have also warned groups planning demonstrations to comply with a court order restricting protests near key government institutions, cautioning that anyone who incites violence or destroys property under the guise of protest would face decisive action.
