A woman has died and two children were injured after the car they were travelling in plunged into a river in Ireland.

The children, believed to be aged 10 and 12, were rescued from the River Lee at Kennedy Quay in Cork city and taken to Cork University Hospital to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The woman has been named locally as primary school teacher and mother-of-two Gillian Daly, 44, from the Douglas area of the city.

Her body was recovered from the river by an Irish Naval Services’ dive team and taken to the same hospital.

Gardai are treating Friday night’s incident as a tragic accident, and said the results of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation.

Ms Daly is survived by her husband John O’Connell and sons Evan and Luke.

Her funeral is to take place on Tuesday at St Patrick’s Church, Millstreet.
