Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah on Thursday inaugurated 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and unveiled the New Enugu Transport Management System, projecting the creation of at least 20,000 jobs and a significant boost to the state’s economy.

The event, held in Enugu, also featured the commissioning of five modern bus terminals at Holy Ghost, Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka. Mbah said the initiatives would help grow Enugu’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to $30 billion and contribute to Nigeria’s $1 trillion GDP target within six years.
“These projects will provide affordable, accessible, and seamless movement for our people, while elevating their standard of living,” the governor said. He credited President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy for paving the way for a modernised, 21st-century transport system.
Mbah announced plans to deploy 2,000 hybrid vehicles alongside the air-conditioned, disability-friendly CNG buses, which will service schools, markets, and major routes. He added that the system is expected to cut household transport costs by over 40 per cent.
The projects also include the remodelling of bus stops across Enugu metropolis, road upgrades in major cities, and the introduction of an electronic ticketing system to curb leakages. The governor said plans are underway for rail and water transport services, following the recent launch of Enugu Air.
Commissioner for Transport Dr. Obi Ozor said each terminal could handle over 10 million commuters annually and offers facilities such as air-conditioned waiting halls, eateries, accommodation, fuel stations, solar-powered security systems, and surveillance cameras.
Enugu North Local Government Chairman Dr. Ibenaku Onoh commended the governor for bringing order, aesthetics, and employment opportunities through the transport modernisation programme.
