Stakeholders in the maritime sector have expressed concern about the installation of multiple illegal jetties in the Lagos area, citing the security implications of such activities.
Stakeholders believe that with the emergence of such illicit jetties and the concomitant malpractices in cargo clearance through such facilities, weapons and ammunition could easily be smuggled into the country without the knowledge of appropriate government agencies.
According to Chris Borha, former General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, he stated that the growth of barging activities in the country, particularly in the Lagos area, has led to the creation of additional such illegal facilities.
