Women in Iran are burning their headscarves and cutting their hair in protest against the Iranian morality police for the alleged killing of Mahsa Amini.

Amini Mahsa, 22 years old Iranian, died last Friday, September 16th, 2022 while in the custody of the Islamic Republic’s morality police only three days after being detained for what the authorities described as an “unsuitable attire”, basically implying her hijab was worn in an improper way.

Since then, protests have spread throughout much of the country, and it’s been reported that at least eight people have been killed in these protests. The authorities have, however, denied any wrong-doing, claiming she suffered sudden heart failure.

Women have been dancing and burning their headscarves in Iran Northern City Sari, while in Istanbul Turkey, women are cutting off their hair outside the Iranian Consulate to stand in solidarity with Iranian women.

There has been widespread internet outage across the country, as well as disruption of cellphone services, attributing to reports that officials in Iran appear to be restricting access to mobile networks and communication platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp.

Since the Islamic revolution of 1970, all women have been required to wear an Islamic headscarf, and the Iranian Morality Police have the authority to arrest women who they believe have violated the dress code, though they are usually released with only a warning.

Many Iranians, including pro-government officials, have taken to social media to express their outrage over the situation and even the existence of the morality police.
