LASSA FEVER : Three States Account For Six New Cases.

Six new additional Lassa fever cases reported in the nation are associated with Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi state.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control offical website, recorded cases between Monday, September 12, and Sunday, September 18, 2022 is alarming,  as Ondo (32%), Edo (26%), and Bauchi (13%).

The viral hemorrhagic fever called Lassa is spread by rats. It can potentially kill tens of thousands of people and is primarily found in West Africa.

Typically, exposure to food or household items contaminated with the urine or feaces of infected rats is how people contract the Lassa virus. The Lassa fever virus may also be transmitted through bodily fluids.

The organization revealed that the three states bear 71% of the burden of infections in the nation.

It further stated that with 171 deaths and a case fatality rate of 18.5%, this brings the total number of confirmed cases in 2022 to 923..
According to the NCDC, 102 local government areas in about 25 of the federation’s states reported at least one confirmed case in 2022.

The agency reports that from eight new confirmed cases in week 36 of 2022 to six cases in week 37.

According to the situation report, 102 Local Government Areas in 25 States have reported at least one confirmed case for the year 2022. The affected age range is primarily between 21 and 30. (Range: 0 to 90 years, Median Age: 30 years). For confirmed cases, the male-to-female ratio is 1:0.8. Comparing the reported figures for the same period in 2021 to the current number of suspected cases shows an increase.
No new healthcare employee was impacted in reporting week 37, according to the agency.

The National Lassa Fever Technical Working Group (TWG) “continues to coordinate the response activities at all levels,” according to the statement.
