Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday said that the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Nigeria’s deepest seaport, will begin testing operations next week.
The test run is a prerequisite for the $1.5 billion seaport’s commercial operation.
A top official at Lekki Port stated yesterday that once the long-awaited deep seaport is completed, the nation’s port industry would be able to compete with the ports of Abidjan, Lome, and Tema.
The Lekki Port, with a depth of 16.5 metres, was planned to cover the gap in predicted demand for containerized products, particularly as the capacity of current ports in Apapa and Tin-Can, to manage the number of boats and cargoes arriving at the port becomes difficult.
The world-class port is anticipated to create more than 100,000 jobs and transform port operations throughout the country.
The port, according to the top official, was completely done and would shortly begin operations, much to the satisfaction of shippers and manufacturers that rely on seaports to bring in raw materials and export finished items.
