The Lagos State Government has announced that full enforcement against all land reclamation projects operating without Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approvals and Drainage Clearance will begin on Wednesday, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to developers.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the government said the exercise aligns with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 and other relevant regulations.
According to a public notice signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the ultimatum was first published in national newspapers — The Punch and The Nation — on September 18 and 19, 2025, respectively, and expired on September 25.
“This is to notify the general public, particularly individuals, developers, and corporate bodies engaging in unauthorized land reclamation and waterfront encroachment, that the grace period of seven days for compliance and cessation of illegal reclamation activities has since expired,” the statement read.
The Commissioner explained that enforcement actions will include the demolition of all illegal reclamation structures, seizure of equipment and materials found at prohibited sites, and prosecution of offenders in line with the state’s Environmental and Urban Development Laws.
Wahab warned residents against patronizing illegal reclamation operators, stressing that the measures are necessary to safeguard the environment, prevent flooding, and protect public safety across the state.
He further urged developers and individuals to visit the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Block 16, Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, for guidance on obtaining the required EIA Approval and Drainage Clearance.
