The Independent National Electoral Commission office was set on fire at Iyana Mortuary ll in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, early on Thursday, Novmeber 10th.

According to information obtained by our correspondent, a group of thugs, estimated to number eight, scaled the perimeter fence, jumped onto the property, and lit the INEC building on fire from behind.

In order to light up the INEC office, it was learned that the thugs soaked bread loaves in gasoline after breaking into the building and threw the mixture into the structure at various angles.

Further information revealed that Azeez Hamzat, a security guard at the facility, had called the police in a distress call at around 1am to inform them of the fire incident.

According to reports, the police from Ibara division dispatched detectives to the scene and later got in touch with members of the state’s fire service, who hurried to extinguish the flames.

Niyi Ijalaye, the Ogun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, confirmed the incident when contacted and called it shocking.

The REC stated that an assessment of the situation was ongoing.

“It is true that our office was set on fire,” he said. Police are looking into it. I’m at a loss for words. I’m also in disbelief.

“We made nighttime calls to the police and other security services. The situation was brought under control by the fire brigade. The extent of the harm is still being evaluated.

“It is shocking and improper. The security organizations are making every effort. We will get together once more later today to develop additional plans (for securing our facilities).

The store, the office of the Registration Area Officer, and the conference room may have been damaged by the fire, according to an INEC source.

The source also informed our correspondent that the fire had an impact on non-sensitive materials.

The source said that neither a life nor an injury was lost in the fire.

As of the time this report was filed, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, could not be reached for comment.
