James Trafford is set to undergo a medical at Manchester City today as he closes in on a return from Burnley.

City have reached an agreement with Burnley to re-sign the goalkeeper for £27 million.

Although the initial deal was valued at around £31 million plus add-ons, the fee has been reduced due to a sell-on clause City had previously included in Trafford’s contract.

The 21-year-old, a product of City’s academy, has agreed to a five-year deal with an additional one-year option. He is expected to compete with Ederson for the starting goalkeeper role under manager Pep Guardiola.

Stefan Ortega is likely to depart the club, though no deal is currently imminent. Burnley have shown interest in securing his services.

Manchester City are reportedly satisfied with how their strategic sell-on clause has played out, viewing it as a successful form of a buy-back arrangement.

The club may now place greater emphasis on such clauses when negotiating future player sales.
