Iran’s parliament is ready to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if the United Nations reinstates international sanctions, senior lawmaker Manouchehr Mottaki said on Wednesday.
Speaking to Defapress, Mottaki issued the warning amid heightened tensions as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — the so-called E3 group — consider triggering the UN “snapback” mechanism, which would automatically restore sanctions if Iran is found in breach of its nuclear commitments. The provision expires in October.
The European stance follows months of stalled diplomacy and growing concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment. Tehran has repeatedly vowed “decisive measures” against renewed sanctions, with NPT withdrawal described as a last resort.
Iran signed the treaty in 1968 and ratified it in 1970, pledging not to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for access to civilian nuclear technology. Exiting the pact could further heighten tensions and deepen Tehran’s isolation.
