Delta State governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has said that the insecurity currently bugging the country was a result of the bad seed sowed a few years back.

As a special guest at the 11th Zik Lecture Series at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Okowa declared this in Anambra.

The governor called Nigeria’s security situation as a hydra-headed monster that has weakened public safety and threatens the country’s continuing existence as one undivided, indivisible entity.

Other factors contributing to the country’s current state of insecurity, according to Okowa, include the lack of modern security architecture, easy access to weapons by citizens, lopsidedness in power sharing, religious bigotry and intolerance, and the government’s disregard for citizens’ fundamental human rights.

Speaking about the upcoming election, Okowa, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice presidential candidate, expressed optimism that, in accordance with the new Electoral Act, which requires Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic transmission of results, ballot box hijacking and other election-related violence will be reduced.

He went on to say that while Nigeria requires a strong leader, it equally requires strong institutions. He cited the police, media, judiciary, legislature, and INEC as institutions that need to be improved in Nigeria.
