Gunmen ambushed a commercial bus bound for Onitsha, Anambra State, and abducted the driver and ten passengers in Benue State.
According to reports, the victims were on their way from Jos, Plateau State, when the incident occurred.
It was reported that the incident occurred while the driver was attempting to accelerate and zoom out of a dangerous zone on a bad section of the highway.
According to a source close to the transport company, the bus left Jos at around 7:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022, with ten passengers, including the driver, but ran into the gunmen at about 4:00 p.m. on the Eke highway in Benue State.
The source also stated that the kidnappers demanded N5 million from each passenger from the transport business in Jos on Saturday, October 22, and threatened to kill the victims if the ransom was not paid by Monday, October 24.
He further added that apart from Saturday’s phone call with the kidnappers, they had not called again but resorted to calling relatives of the passengers in their custody.
It was learned that relatives and parents of the victims met on Monday, October 24, at the premises of the transport company in Jos and agreed to make a collective decision about the ransom and negotiation rather than an individualistic approach.
