Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a wise leader and a steadfast friend of India.
In a condolence message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Modi expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing, recalling their personal interactions and shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment to India-Nigeria friendship stood out,” Modi wrote.
The Indian Prime Minister noted that Buhari played a vital role in enhancing ties between Nigeria and India during his tenure, and left behind a legacy of partnership and mutual respect.
“I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people and the government of Nigeria,” he added.
Former President Buhari died on Sunday in a London hospital at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness. His death has continued to draw tributes from leaders across the globe, including several African heads of state and now the Prime Minister of India.
