The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the mobilisation of more than 700 police officers from across the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the Police Mobile Force (PMF) to the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU).
The approval was conveyed through an internal police signal dated December 18, 2025, issued by the Department of Finance and Administration (Welfare), Force Headquarters, Abuja. The signal was circulated to senior officers nationwide, including the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police.
Titled “Mobilization/Demobilization In/Out of Police Mobile Force (PMF) and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU),” the signal stated that the IGP had authorised the mobilisation of inspectors and rank-and-file officers from various commands and formations, as indicated against their names. It was signed by the Commissioner of Police (Welfare), CP Usman K. Jibrin.
According to the document, the FCT Command has the highest number of officers affected, with 121 personnel listed for deployment. Among the states, Borno will release 34 officers, Gombe 43, Niger 36, Benue 26, Nasarawa 26, and Kogi 24. Other states affected include Akwa Ibom (24), Bauchi (23), Ebonyi (23), Taraba (22), Oyo (19), Plateau (19), Yobe (18), Kwara (17), Rivers (17), and Jigawa (17), among others.
Lagos Command will release three officers, while Enugu has one. The mobilisation also includes officers drawn from zonal commands, with one officer each from Zones 1 Kano, 3 Yola, 4 Makurdi, 9 Umuahia, 12 Bauchi, and 13 Ukpo, Awka.
The document was addressed to key formations within the Nigeria Police Force, including the Department of Operations, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Federal Operations, and all zonal and state headquarters. Affected commands were directed to warn and release the officers to proceed as instructed.
The deployment comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes across the country.
