Persistent rainfall on Monday disrupted daily activities in Mumbai, India’s financial hub, causing flight delays, flooded roads, and school closures.
The India Meteorological Department reported that some parts of the city recorded over 140 millimetres of rainfall since morning. The downpour resulted in severe traffic congestion as vehicles were stranded on waterlogged streets, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors.
Late Sunday night, three people sustained injuries when a staircase collapsed in a two-storey building in southern Mumbai.
Officials have issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby areas, warning that heavy rains are likely to continue until Tuesday. In response, schools across the city have been ordered closed.
Flight operations were also disrupted, with at least nine incoming aircraft aborting landings, according to NDTV. It was not immediately clear if the flights were diverted.
The situation in Mumbai follows weeks of torrential rainfall across India’s Himalayan states, which has left dozens dead and submerged several villages, heightening concerns over the broader impact of the monsoon season.
