According to the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), climate change issues could be addressed by restoring the country’s forest reserves.
The foundation stated that addressing climate change would also address the country’s flooding.
Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director General of NCF, told journalists during a tree planting exercise in Awka, Anambra State, that the foundation has planted 1,500 trees in Anambra State through its Green Recovery Nigeria Project (GRNP) in an effort to reclaim some of the country’s dwindling forest cover.
“The successful recovery of the country’s forest reserve will help tackle climate change and prevent things like the recent flooding,” Onoja said.
He stated that the foundation planted economic trees that would provide income to the people in addition to holding the soil and providing forest cover.
Local pear, apple, avocado pear, sour sop, bread fruit, cashew, and local mango were among the tree species.
