On Monday, October 24th, the Federal Government, through Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, condemned the unregulated use of social media and other digital platforms around the world.

During the opening session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s global media and information literacy week, the minister emphasized the importance of individuals being adequately prepared to manage the information at their disposal.

“The theme of this year’s Global MIL week, ‘Nurturing Trust: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative,’ is not only apt but also timely as our world and its leaders grapple with the challenge of identifying what is true and what is false in light of the use of media and information,” Mohammed said.

“As I consider the state of our world and the enormous challenges it faces, particularly with the unregulated use of social media and other digital platforms, I see an urgent need for everyone to be equipped with the ability to critically evaluate and wisely use the information at their disposal.”

“I am optimistic that, beginning with the parallel sessions that begin immediately after the last plenary session on Friday morning, contributions and questions will all be geared toward finding the links to building trust among our societies and individuals through the use of media and information literacy,” Mohammed added.

“As I urge you all to give this your full attention, knowing that the outcome of this global MIL week will be watched by the entire world, I warmly welcome you back to Nigeria.” I encourage you to explore Abuja and have a good time.”

The UNESCO global and mass literacy week 2022 is currently underway in Abuja.
