Despite criticism, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has increased the number of Special Assistants on Political Units he will appoint from 28,000, announced on Wednesday, to 50,000.
The latest appointment was announced in a press statement by Kelvin Ebiri, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Media. He stated that the appointments would be effective immediately. On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, the governor appointed 14,319 Ward Liaison Officers and 40 Local Government Area Liaison Officers.
On Wednesday, October 12, he reviewed the number to 28,000 and yesterday evening, October 13, he reviewed the number to 50,000.
Concerns have been raised, however, that the appointees are political thugs given government cover by Wike. The governor’s failure to specify the job descriptions of the new appointees has fueled speculation.
