In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship and solidarity, players of the Super Falcons paid a visit to Banyana Banyana midfielder Gabriela Salgado in Casablanca on Tuesday, just hours after their intense semi-final clash in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Salgado suffered a serious injury during South Africa’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Nigeria at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. The 27-year-old midfielder sustained a fracture in her left leg following an unfortunate collision late in the game, which saw her stretchered off in visible pain and taken to hospital for immediate care.
The injury cast a somber tone on what was otherwise a fiercely competitive encounter between two of the continent’s top teams. Demonstrating true camaraderie beyond rivalry, several members of the Super Falcons squad visited Salgado at the Mohammed VI University Hospital, where she later underwent a successful surgery on Wednesday.

Medical staff have confirmed that she is expected to be out of action for up to a year, dealing a major blow to both her club and national team. Despite the setback, Salgado has reportedly remained in high spirits, expressing gratitude for the support she has received from teammates, opponents, fans, and the football community at large.
Meanwhile, South Africa will now turn their attention to the third-place match, where they are set to face Ghana on Friday. Nigeria, on the other hand, will be aiming to clinch a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in the final.
The Super Falcons’ gesture has been widely praised as a reminder of the unity and respect that defines the beautiful game, even in the face of fierce competition.
