Former Arsenal and Ghana international footballer Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Tuesday, where he faces multiple rape and sexual assault charges.
The 32-year-old has been formally charged with five counts of rape involving two women and an additional charge of sexual assault against a third woman.
The alleged incidents occurred between 2021 and 2022, during Partey’s time at Arsenal.
His court appearance comes just days after his contract with the North London club expired at the end of June.
Dressed in a black zip-up jumper, Partey stood with his hands behind his back as the charges were read out in court.
The Metropolitan Police began investigating the case in February 2022, following an initial report of rape.
Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, stated that her client “denies all the charges against him” and “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 in a £45 million ($60 million) transfer.
He made 167 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals, including four in 52 matches last season. Internationally, he has earned 51 caps for Ghana.
