For the second year in a row, Robert Lewandowski claimed the trophy for last season’s best goalscorer, dubbed the Gerd Mueller Trophy, at the Ballon d’Or presentation on Monday.
Last season, the 34-year-old, who joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in the offseason, scored 57 goals in 56 outings for club and country. With 35 goals, he was the Bundesliga’s leading scorer.
But he has yet to win the Ballon d’Or, having barely lost to Lionel Messi a year ago.
The Pole would have been a strong favorite to win the award in 2020, but the event was controversially canceled owing to the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the football schedule.
