Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, gave N55 million to flood victims in Bayelsa State Wednesday.

During a sympathy visit to Government House in Yenagoa, he said the gesture was his way of helping people impacted by the natural disaster.

Describing the disaster as disappointing, Abubakar bemoaned its impact on the state’s people’s lives and economy, urging the Federal Government and public-spirited individuals and organizations to assist Bayelsa in this challenging time.

The former Vice President advocated for the creation of an independent flood disaster relief fund to assist victims, as well as a temporary fund for farmers to mitigate losses and provide cash for the following planting season.

Abubakar then visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp at the Oxbow Lake Pavilion in Yenagoa with Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and several National Assembly members from the state, where he donated another N5 million cash to the victims.

In response, Diri stated that the ex-vice president’s gesture of affection encouraged the people of Bayelsa.
