Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, the FCT Minister of State, has made an impassioned plea to the federal government to provide assistance to the state government in the form of relief supplies as people struggle with the devastating effects of floods in some areas of Kogi state.

At the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, October 5th, the minister who made this call also raised concern about a potential epidemic of communicable diseases if prompt action is not done to lessen the suffering of the populace.

While stressing the significance of the Lokoja/Abuja expressway as a vital connection between the northern and southern regions of the nation, Aliyu bemoaned the substantial man-hours lost on the road as a result of the heavy traffic congestion brought on by the flood.

She said, “Canoes and ferry boats are the only means of access to stores and hospitals. Houses are fully submerged, although the majority of smaller buildings are only partially underwater.

“We worry about a disease outbreak. We require medical assistance. Some people lack access to food and clean water.

“As it is, travelers spend more than 11 hours on that stretch without food or drink from the Koton Karfe area before the bridge.”

While applauding the state government’s decision to evacuate residents of the low plains, the minister urged quick federal action because the flood is already threatening to reach the upper land.

“Some really deep locations, your excellency, they had to evacuate to the upper land, but even so, it keeps flowing.” As of yesterday, the level had risen.

“Your Excellency, may I take this opportunity to call your attention and the attention of the federal government to request support for the people of Kogi State and Kogi State itself?” she said.

However, Aliyu, who also brought FEC attention to the danger the road offers to commuters, noted that multiple trucks could have plunged into the river without the drivers’ foresight and ability.

“Your Excellency, this is a gateway city and a significant road that connects the north and south.” This portends danger, particularly for a passerby unfamiliar with the area, such as the expensive bus operators, because the bridge has been underwater in the last three to four days, which is frightening in and of itself.”

The minister continues, “For this reason, I’m bringing it to your attention as well as the attention of FEC. I’m also asking my sister, the honorable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, who has always supported places in need, to check into this so that prompt action may be taken.

“Your Excellency, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that there is a looming threat, from disease spread to death, as we have already recorded four casualties.”
