The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Sunday in London.
The announcement was made on Monday through a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior. The holiday forms part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, said the decision had received presidential approval.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served the nation with unwavering dedication, integrity, and a firm commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development. This holiday gives Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on his legacy and the values he championed,” the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo encouraged citizens to honour the former president’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion—ideals he consistently advocated during his lifetime.
The Ministry also confirmed that national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
