Workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have commenced an indefinite strike, closing government offices across Abuja and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory. The industrial action follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to FCTA management to address longstanding labour and welfare grievances.
The strike was declared by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), whose leaders said government authorities ignored repeated engagements and failed to resolve issues including unpaid wage awards, promotion arrears, delayed promotions, illegal retention of retired officials, non-remittance of pension and National Housing Fund contributions, and poor working conditions. JUAC also criticized the 2024 promotion examinations, claiming 77.5 percent of candidates were unfairly failed.
In a statement signed by JUAC President Comrade Rifkatu Iortyer and Secretary Comrade Abdullahi Saleh, all FCTA staff across secretariats, departments, agencies, area councils, and parastatals were ordered to comply fully with the strike until their demands are met. Copies of the strike notice were reportedly forwarded to the Minister of State for the FCT, the Chief of Staff, the Head of Service, and the Director of Security Services.
As of Monday morning, government offices in Abuja city centre and area councils were deserted, with administrative activities effectively paralysed. JUAC has vowed not to suspend the strike until all worker entitlements are paid and welfare issues are resolved.
