The European Union has approved a plan to phase out all Russian gas imports by January 1, 2028, in a move aimed at cutting Moscow’s energy revenues used to fund its war in Ukraine.
EU energy ministers, meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, endorsed the proposal, establishing a clear timeline for ending dependence on Russian energy.
According to the Council of the European Union, new contracts for Russian gas will be banned from January 2026, while existing short-term contracts will end by June 2026. All long-term supply agreements are to be terminated by January 2028.
The bloc said the decision reinforces Europe’s commitment to energy security and independence amid ongoing geopolitical tensions with Russia.
