On Wednesday 21st September, 2022, the attorney general of New York filed a lawsuit against former U.S. president Donald Trump and his corporation, alleging that some of their most valuable assets, including real estate in Manhattan, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., had been the subject of financial fraud.

The three-year civil investigation by Democrats into Trump and the Trump Organization has culminated in Attorney General Letitia James’ complaint, which was filed in state court in New York. Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump, three of Trump’s eldest children, as well as Allen Weisselberg and Jeffrey McConney, were also named as defendants alongside two longstanding company executives.

The lawsuit aims to slam the foundation of what made Trump famous, shining a blacklight on the image of wealth and opulence he’s enjoyed throughout his career, first as a real estate developer, then as a reality TV star on “The Apprentice” and “Celebrity Apprentice,” and subsequently as president.

James, a Democrat, who has spent over three years investigating the U.S former president gave details of the lawsuit’s specifics at a news conference on Wednesday 21, September, he said, “Donald Trump falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unjustly enrich himself, and cheat the system, thereby cheating all of us,”

According to the attorney general’s office, the objective was to enhance Trump’s reputation as a billionaire and the value of his properties whenever doing so afforded him a benefit, while downplaying the worth of assets when doing so was necessary for tax purposes.
