Former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to offer “meaningful political direction” for Nigeria.
In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP leadership on Thursday, Melaye announced his withdrawal from the party “at all levels of involvement,” with immediate effect.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he stated.
The former lawmaker said the decision followed “deep reflection” on the current state of the PDP and expressed his inability to continue aligning with the party’s direction.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” he wrote.
Melaye, who served in the National Assembly from 2015 to 2023, thanked the PDP for the opportunity to serve under its platform but reiterated that he could not maintain his membership.
“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he concluded.
Melaye’s exit marks another blow to the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and concerns over its readiness for the 2027 general elections.
