The Delta State Government has awarded a N35 billion contract for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

According to the Delta State Tenders Board, the project covers the stretch from the Spare Parts Market U-Turn, Effurun in Ovwie Local Government Area, to near Ohore Junction before Omenta Bridge in Uvwie and Okpe local government areas. The reconstruction is scheduled for completion within 12 months.

The contract terms specify the reconstruction of 10 kilometres of the dual carriageway—five kilometres on each side—with an expanded width of 11.6 metres and 2.8-metre shoulders. The scope also includes stormwater drains, reinforced concrete pavement, and a durable wearing course.

Officials said the project aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E development blueprint, which prioritises infrastructure renewal and sustainable urban development. When completed, the road is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and boost socio-economic activities along one of Delta’s busiest transport corridors.

The Warri–Sapele–Benin Road, classified as a federal Trunk A road, has for years suffered severe deterioration, resulting in frequent gridlocks, accidents, and worsening insecurity.

“The state’s intervention reflects a determination to provide timely relief to motorists and preserve Delta’s status as a commercial hub in the South-South,” Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said.

He added that by engaging CCECC, the government has assured residents of a durable and high-quality project. The intervention, he noted, comes after the state’s completion of the Asaba–Kwale–Isoko–Ughelli highway, further underscoring Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that promotes growth and reliable access to markets, industries, and neighbouring states.
