The death toll from severe floods on Indonesia’s island of Bali has risen to 14, with two people still missing, authorities said on Thursday.
Disaster agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said more than 500 residents have been evacuated to schools and mosques, while 125 rescuers are searching for the missing in Denpasar, the island’s capital. Torrential rains earlier in the week caused flooding in Denpasar and six of Bali’s eight regions, cutting off major roads, including access routes to the international airport. Landslides were also reported.
Most victims were swept away after rivers overflowed, though officials confirmed no foreigners were among the casualties and airport operations remain unaffected. About 500 military personnel have been deployed to clear mud, rocks, and debris from the streets, while teams continue pumping water out of buildings.
Heavy rainfall also hit East Nusa Tenggara province, where four more deaths were recorded.
