Colombian Senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe has died, two months after being shot in the head during a campaign rally in an attack that stunned the nation. He was 39.
Uribe’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed his death in a statement. The senator had been in hospital for nine weeks, undergoing multiple surgeries. Doctors reported a deterioration over the weekend due to severe brain bleeding, and despite intensive care, he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have arrested four people in connection with the shooting, including a 14-year-old boy identified as the gunman. Prosecutors have not disclosed a motive, but all four face charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.
The three adults — Carlos Eduardo Mora, Katerine Martínez, and William González — have also been charged with using a minor to commit a crime.
Uribe’s killing has heightened fears over political violence ahead of Colombia’s presidential election, sparking renewed debate about the safety of candidates and the role of criminal groups in the country’s politics.
