Tanzania made a dream start to their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 campaign, securing a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the tournament opener on Saturday night in Dar es Salaam.

A buzzing Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium provided the perfect backdrop as the Taifa Stars thrilled the home crowd with a confident performance, marking their first-ever win in a CHAN opening match after previously losing both tournament debuts.

Abdul Sopu gave Tanzania the lead with a composed penalty just before halftime, after Clement Mzize was brought down in the box by Frank Tologo.

Defender Mohamed Hussein then doubled the advantage in the 71st minute, rising highest to nod home Mudathir Yahya’s well-placed cross.

The result places Tanzania in a strong early position in Group B, which also features Burundi and the Central African Republic.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, remain winless in their CHAN openers, extending a frustrating streak that now spans four tournaments.

Tanzania began brightly, with Clement Mzize and Feisal Salum both testing goalkeeper Ladji Sanou early on.

The visitors threatened briefly, forcing Yakoub Suleiman into action to deny Souleymane Sangaré and Papus Ouattara on the break.

Burkina Faso made three changes at halftime in an attempt to shift momentum, bringing on seasoned campaigners Patrick Malo and Yves Koutiama.

However, it was Tanzania who maintained control, dominating possession and pressing with intensity.

The Taifa Stars’ persistence paid off when Hussein connected with Yahya’s cross to make it 2-0, sending the stadium into celebration.

Burkina Faso tried to mount a late response, but efforts from Tertius Bagré and Ouattara lacked the accuracy needed to trouble the Tanzanian defense.

With three valuable points secured, Tanzania will now aim to carry their momentum into their next group fixture. For Burkina Faso, the path to a historic first knockout stage appearance has become significantly steeper.
