The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has confirmed the release of the second batch of abducted pupils, students and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri, in Niger State.

The confirmation followed reports that all remaining victims held by gunmen since the mass abduction on November 21, 2025, had regained their freedom, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty for families and the community. During the attack, more than 300 pupils and teachers were kidnapped from the boarding school.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, the Church expressed gratitude to all those who supported efforts leading to the release of the victims.

“We appreciate the prayers, solidarity and understanding shown by parents, guardians, the Church, media organisations and the general public throughout this difficult period,” the statement said, while also commending the media for what it described as responsible reporting.

The Diocese also acknowledged the role of government authorities and security agencies in securing the release. “We are profoundly grateful to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Niger State Government, the security agencies and all partners whose efforts and interventions contributed to the safe release of the victims,” it added.

Appreciation was further extended to parents, guardians, clergy, religious communities, humanitarian organisations and members of the public for their prayers and support during the crisis.

The Diocese assured the public that any further updates would be communicated through authorised channels to ensure accuracy and transparency. It reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of pupils and staff, pledging continued collaboration with relevant authorities to guarantee a secure learning environment.

The statement concluded with prayers for protection and peace, calling for the safety of all communities affected by insecurity.
