The opening goal was the fault of the Watford’s 23-year-old goalkeeper. After receiving a back-pass from defender Valentine Ozornwafor, Okoye took his time clearing the ball, allowing the advancing Aribi the time to steal it from his legs and smash it into an empty net. Alex Iwobi of Everton equalized for the Super Eagles before Cyriel Dessers gave them the lead. Aymen Mahious of USM Alger scored Algeria’s second goal to secure a tie.
Despite the gaffe, Okoye will be hoping to keep his starting spot when the Super Eagles face Algeria in a friendly at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Complex on Tuesday. Apart from Okoye, Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro has goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in his squad to choose from.
