Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned remarks made by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, regarding Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, warning that any threat against Obi constitutes a threat to the entire opposition.
Atiku’s reaction follows Okpebholo’s warning that Obi must not visit Edo State again without prior security clearance. The governor linked Obi’s recent visit to the state to a security breach that allegedly led to the death of three individuals.
The comments, made during a public event last Friday, have drawn sharp criticism from across the political spectrum, with many accusing Okpebholo of attempting to intimidate political opponents.
In a clarification issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, the state government denied issuing any threat. According to Itua, the governor’s remarks were merely a call for better coordination and security arrangements for high-profile visits.
“It is imperative to state clearly that the governor did not issue any form of threat to Mr. Obi,” the statement read. “Rather, he emphasized the need for high-profile individuals, particularly politically exposed persons, to notify and seek security clearance from the governor before embarking on any public engagements within the state.”
Itua further noted that, as the state’s Chief Security Officer, the governor has a responsibility to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.
Responding to the development, Atiku declared his full support for Obi and the right of opposition figures to engage freely across the country. “Let it be known that a threat against Peter Obi or any of us is a threat against ALL of us!” he said.
Senators elected on the Labour Party platform also joined in condemning Governor Okpebholo’s remarks, insisting that no state should become a no-go area for any Nigerian citizen, regardless of political affiliation.
