Rev. Chris Okotie, a campaigner for the interim government and a former presidential candidate, has urged the federal government to look for a long-term solution to the problem as members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) return to work today (Monday, October 17th) following an eight-month strike over the condition of educational facilities in the nation.

He admonished that unless Aboriginal Democracy was established, the labor unrest would continue, much like previous recurring problems in the polity.

Even though the ASUU strike has ended, the Okotie Media Office stated that he does not anticipate an end to the regular labor disputes unless professional groups are granted legislative powers as indicated in his interim government proposal.

Okotie asserts that in order to promote economic stability, “the professional bodies should, by virtue of their competence, make laws that govern their spheres of influence, meaning that ASUU should do so for education while the medical association does the same for the health sector.”

The issue we currently face is that a collection of politicians come together to form a legislature that passes laws in specialized fields they are unfamiliar with. The real reason for labor disputes in the nation is that.

The cleric predicted that ASUU, along with doctors and other NLC affiliates, may start another cycle of strikes following what appeared to be a brief period of calm in the educational sector.
