The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission (NUC), has directed Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities to reopen the institutions and resume lectures, following a seven month strike period.
The NUC Executive Secretary Prof Abubakar Rasheed, made the request known in a letter to the vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors. This letter was signed by the NUC Director, Finance and Accounts, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the NUC boss.
“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses,” the letter reads.
This order is coming days after Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, hinted that the government may order the reopening of federal universities in response to the National Industrial Court’s decision.
ASUU, through the strike action has since pressed for increased university funding and a review of lecturers’ salaries, amongst other demands which are yet to be visited by the Federal Goverment.
