Members of the Assemblies of God Church Nigeria elected a new General Superintendent on Thursday, November 17th to lead the church’s operations in the coming years.

Dr. Abel Amadi, the church’s Owerri District Superintendent, will succeed Pastor Ejikeme Ejim, who will officially retire in December 2022.

Amadi defeated the church’s current General Secretary, Pastor Akpan Amaowoh, to become the church’s new national leader.

The election took place on Thursday, during the 37th general council meeting of the church, at the Evangel University, Okpoto campus in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

He received 2,911 votes to defeat his opponent, who received 2,211 votes.

The election took place prior to the send-off ceremony for the outgoing GS, Pastor Ejim, and Treasurer, Dr Vincent Alaje, which took place on Wednesday, November 16th, at the Evangel University, Okpoto campus in Ebonyi State.

Pastor Ejikeme and Dr. Alaje will retire in December 2022 after serving the church for 44 years.

The first Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu, spoke at the Send-Off ceremony and praised the retiring national leaders of the church for their rare leadership qualities and dexterity.

The retiring Assemblies of God Council officers, according to the former Ebonyi governor, who is currently representing Ebonyi North in the Senate, are great men of God who served the church and humanity with humility, dedication, and fear of God.

Egwu, the event’s chairman said;

“If you look at the two retiring generals, you will agree with me that God has truly been with us,” he said (Assemblies of God). I want to thank God for the lives of our retiring generals because they carried out their duties with humility, selflessness, and fear of God. Today, we are here to celebrate them and to pray that God will continue to be with them as they leave the church after a glorious career.”
