This was the hardest movie I’ve ever made. Blood, Sweat & Tears… LITERALLY! Shoutout to @Apple who doubled (and tripled) down on their commitment to deliver this epic story to the world. Here’s the first peek. Emancipation in theaters 12/2, streaming on @Apple TV 12/9

The movie was the hardest one Smith had ever made, according to a Facebook post he made on Monday, October 3rd.

The $120 million runaway slave thriller “Emancipation,” which was directed by Antoine Fuqua, had been in jeopardy following Smith’s jab at the comedian.

The movie, one of Apple’s most well-known productions to date, was once anticipated to be an Oscar contender this year.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ 10-year ban on Smith attending the Oscars has obviously complicated the awards-season rollout of a movie starring him.

The first showing of the movie took place over the weekend in Washington, D.C. as part of the Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, during which Smith spoke on stage and went to the movie.

The biggest test of how eager moviegoers are for a film starring Smith, an actor who has generated more than $6.5 billion in the worldwide box office, will come with the release of “Emancipation.”

Smith plays Peter, a man who escapes from slavery in Louisiana, in the movie. It was influenced by the 1863 images of “Whipped Peter,” who appeared in Harper’s Weekly for the first time and showed a Union Army doctor examining a man who had been mutilated.

Prior to Fuqua and Smith moving the production to New Orleans in response to Georgia’s then-recently enacted laws restricting voting access, the movie was initially scheduled to shoot in Georgia.

Smith resigned from the motion picture academy before the academy banned him, citing his “shocking, painful, and inexcusable actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation.”
It was filmed in the summer of 2021 for “Emancipation.” Its release had been anticipated for 2022 prior to the slap.

Smith has largely avoided the spotlight ever since. He made his most in-depth remarks about the incident in a video that was uploaded to social media in late July and apologized to Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith is still eligible to be nominated for an Oscar.
