Voters in the region have been urged by a pressure group operating under the auspices of the Coalition of Northern Groups to support candidates who are qualified, trustworthy, and capable of handling the challenges facing both the North and the nation.
Jamilu Charanchi, the CNG’s national coordinator, gave the advice to the public on Monday, October 3rd in Gombe Stare at a conference on public sensitization and awareness of the general elections in 2023, themed- “Politics of Sentiments, A Critical Factor Militating Development and Democracy in Nigeria”.
The interests of the region and the country must take precedence over other political considerations, according to Charanchi, who also called on Nigerians from the north.
He contends that Nigerians must resist the temptation to cast ballots in the general election of 2023 along racial or religious lines.
He claimed that the problems the nation was facing were caused by sentiment-based politics and added that such politics had not been advantageous to the nation.
The national coordinator urged voters to put more effort into selecting candidates who would address the nation’s challenges in the areas of economics, security, and other issues for the good of all citizens.
He stated, “We want Nigerians to change their voting behavior from doing so along racial and religious lines to voting in favor of a united Nigeria where credibility, integrity, and competence will take center stage.
He pointed that politicians who use race and religion as political trump cards are the enemies of the people, and such candidates and their parties ought to be disqualified.
Muhammed Babaji, the CNG coordinator for Gombe State, expressed hope that if Nigerians abstained from violence and supported peaceful elections, the 2023 election would usher in a new era for the nation.
