Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has cautioned people damaging political opponents’ campaign posters, billboards, and other campaign materials in the state to stop or face the wrath of the law.
The Governor stated that such behaviour will not be accepted, whether from supporters of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, or opposing political parties, since he believed in guaranteeing a level playing field for all.
Terver Akase, the Governor’s Special Adviser Media and Publicity, declared in a statement published in Makurdi that democracy gives freedom for everyone to campaign without harassment or molestation
He emphasised that no individual or group had the authority to take down opponents’ campaign materials for any reason, and vowed that such behaviour will not be tolerated in the state.
He did, however, warn political parties, candidates, and supporters to always ensure that their posters and billboards were put in permitted areas and to refrain from defacing Makurdi and other towns in the state by indiscriminate campaign material placement.
Governor Ortom recommended anybody planning to install a billboard in the state to first get consent from the appropriate government institutions.
