The first Peace Treaty for the General Election in 2023 has been signed by political parties and their Presidential candidates, following the start of campaigns ahead of the elections.
The peace agreement was signed with the General Abdusalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee on Thursday, September 29 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.
Although the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was absent from the event, his running mate, Sen. Kassim Shetima was a signatory to the peace treaty.
Speaking at the event, President Buhari, Abdusalami Abubakar, and Goodluck Jonathan, among others, urged political parties to avoid actions that could jeopardize national security as they prepare to campaign for the upcoming elections.
President Buhari who spoke through a video recording, thanked members of the National Peace Committee, led by its Chairman, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, for their commitment and dedication to supporting peaceful elections in Nigeria and facilitating peace in general across the country.
“Democracy in the country has shift focus away from issue-based campaigns to amplifying the potential for personal attacks, insults, and incitement.” Buhari stated.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who also spoke via video at the event, praised the National Peace Committee members’ resilience and commitment to peace in Nigeria, as well as their efforts to ensure peaceful elections in the country.
