Sixteen inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, early Tuesday after overpowering warders on duty.
The Nigerian Correctional Service said the prisoners breached the facility’s security before attacking personnel, leaving five officers injured. Two of the injured are in serious condition and receiving treatment at a government hospital.
Seven escapees have been recaptured, while efforts are underway to locate the remaining nine, according to the service’s spokesperson, Umar Abubakar.
Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility and ordered a full investigation. He warned that any staff found complicit would face disciplinary action, and directed security agencies to assist in the manhunt.
The incident adds to a series of jailbreaks in recent years, including mass escapes in Suleja, Kuje, Imo, and Oyo prisons.
