At least 10 people were killed and 61 others injured on Monday when a freight train collided with a double-decker passenger bus in central Mexico, authorities said.

The crash occurred in an industrial area along the highway between Atlacomulco, about 115 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, and Maravatío in Michoacán state. Officials reported that the bus attempted to cross the tracks ahead of the oncoming train. Images from the scene showed the bus’s upper front crushed and its frame mangled as emergency workers secured the wreckage.

The State of Mexico’s attorney general’s office confirmed that seven women and three men were among the dead. Several of the injured remain in critical condition, while others received treatment and were discharged from nearby hospitals.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City de México, the rail operator, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged motorists to respect railway crossing signals. Bus operator Herradura de Plata has not yet commented on the incident.

Deadly road accidents are frequent in Mexico. Government data shows more than 12,000 crashes occurred on federal highways in 2023, resulting in nearly 1,900 deaths and over 6,000 injuries. In February, more than 40 people were killed in one of the country’s worst recent crashes when a bus traveling from Cancún to Tabasco struck a trailer truck and caught fire.

Buses remain the main mode of intercity transport in Mexico, where passenger train services are limited. President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration has pledged to expand rail networks across northern and central regions to improve safety and connectivity.
