President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who died at the age of 92.
Imam Abubakar gained national and international recognition in 2018 after sheltering more than 200 Christians in his mosque and residence during violent communal clashes in parts of Plateau State, a move widely credited with saving many lives.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late cleric as an outstanding religious leader whose life exemplified courage, compassion and respect for the sanctity of human life.
“At a time when tribal and religious sentiments threatened to overwhelm reason, Imam Abubakar stood firmly on the side of peace, benevolence and conscience,” Tinubu said.
The President noted that despite the risk to his own life, the cleric chose unity over division and love over hatred, adding that his actions reflected the true essence of faith.
“His heroic act speaks louder than sermons and sends a powerful message to the world. Imam Abubakar is a worthy example of the kind of humanity we should all aspire to,” the President stated.
Tinubu recalled that the Imam’s bravery earned him several local and international honours in recognition of his commitment to peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths.
He urged religious and community leaders across the country to emulate the late cleric by promoting tolerance, mutual respect and national unity.
The President also prayed for the repose of the deceased, asking God to grant him eternal rest and reward him for his courage and good deeds.
